Mexico City, Federal District, or in abbreviated form Mexico City, is the capital and seat of the federal powers of the Mexican United States. The city was founded by the Aztecs in the center of the Valley of Mexico, with the name of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, in 1325, but by then there were several cities that exceeded for centuries in political importance as with existing Azcapotzalco from the second century, the city of Mexico would become what is now known as the capital of the Aztec Empire. In the sixteenth century the Aztecs were defeated with the capture of the city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan and its sister city of Mexico-Tlatelolco at the hands of the emerging Spanish Empire in 1521, an event that will mark the beginning of the Conquest of Mexico.
